W100: Grandeur With Fog and Family

Date: May 28, 2018

Purpose: Recovery Time, Family Time

Distance: 8 miles

Although this technically doesn’t meet the criteria of a blogged training run because it is less than the requisite 10 mile threshold to justify a write-up, I am doing it anyways. Being awith my family in the mountains is one of my very favorite things. It certainly doesn’t happen enough, in my opinion. So to be able to hike Grandeur Peak as a family of 6 was very powerful to me. They all hiked strong, with minimal murmuring or complaining. For some of the kids, it just took a half mile or so to “wake up” and “shake up” their bodies enough to be ready to hike smoothly.

The only downside of the hike? The grand view from Grandeur was completely gone when we summited – to our dismay the summit was complete enshrouded in a cloud when we arrived.  So our view turned out to be nothing more than moist, gray, thick mist in all directions - talk about anti-climatic. . Either way, still a memorable hike up this, The Younger Brother of Mount Olympus.

And afterward we finished out our Memorial Day memory by going to watch “Solo: A Star Wars Story” as a family.

This entry also commemorates the yo-yo hike I did up Grandeur, going up the steep and exposed and shadeless west side, resting briefly at the top, going down the more lush and gentle east side, then back up the east side, again resting briefly at the top, and then back down the west side.  It is a real “quick hit” for getting a sweaty face and a cardiovascular surge.
